Beer Review: De Ranke Saison de Dottignies
If you are looking for a masterclass in how to balance traditional farmhouse rusticity with an assertive, modern hop profile, look no further than De Ranke’s Saison de Dottignies. This is not the overly sweet, fruit-bomb interpretation of a saison that has become common in the craft beer world; rather, it is a lean, dry, and unapologetically hoppy ale that respects its Belgian roots while showcasing the incredible quality of whole-flower hops.
The Experience
Visuals: The beer pours a beautiful, hazy, deep amber that glows with a marmalade hue. It is topped by a towering, rocky white head that displays remarkable retention, leaving behind intricate, sticky lacing on the glass that persists until the very end.
Aroma: The nose is a sophisticated dialogue between malt and hops. You get the expected bready, slightly doughy malt base, but it is quickly uplifted by vibrant, sinus-clearing notes of lemon zest, grapefruit pith, and fresh grass. There is a faint, rustic “farmhouse” undertone, reminiscent of wet hay and a touch of peppery yeast spice, that ties the aroma together.
Flavor: On the palate, it is crisp, refreshing, and bone-dry. The initial sip offers a clean, bready malt foundation, but the beer quickly pivots to a layered hop experience. You will find bright citrus notes, a slight herbal bitterness, and a mineral-like crispness. There is just enough fruitiness to maintain the saison character, but the finish is dominated by a persistent, elegant bitterness that invites you back for another sip immediately.
Mouthfeel: Light-to-medium in body with highly active, fine-bubbled carbonation. It feels lively and effervescent on the tongue, which makes the 5.5% ABV feel remarkably light and thirst-quenching.
Saison de Dottignies is, in my opinion, one of the most useful beers you can have in your fridge. It is complex enough to analyze and contemplate during a slow evening, yet simple enough to be the perfect companion for a backyard BBQ or a casual dinner. It is a testament to the fact that you do not need high alcohol content to create a beer with profound depth and character.
Perfect For:
Pairing with aged goat cheese, grilled seafood, or simply enjoyed on a warm spring afternoon.
