Beer Review: Alvarado Street Chug Shootout 12th Anniversary DDH West Coast IPA
Alvarado Street Brewery’s 12th Anniversary release, Chug Shootout, is a high-octane victory lap that proves why they remain masters of the West Coast style. This Double Dry Hopped (DDH) IPA is a masterclass in hop saturation without the heavy malt baggage.
The Stats
Style: DDH West Coast IPA
ABV: 7.2%
Hops: Mosaic, Nelson, Dolcita, and Centennial
Tasting Notes
Appearance
It pours a remarkably clean, pale straw gold with a brilliant clarity that defines the modern “New West Coast” look. A frothy, bone-white head lingers at the top, leaving behind intricate lacing that stays for the entire session.
Aroma
The “high-octane” description from the brewery isn’t hyperbole. As soon as the can is cracked, you’re hit with a draft of passion fruit and ripe mango. Following close behind are the signature Nelson notes, guava and gooseberry, complemented by a sharp, citrusy zip of pomelo and bitter orange.
Palate
The palate is lean, crisp, and exceptionally dry.
The Lead: Tropical fruit dominates the entry, with a “spicy” Sauvignon Blanc edge (thanks to the Nelson) weaving through the middle.
The Finish:
A firm, resinous pine backbone keeps the sweetness in check, providing a clean bitterness that cuts through like fresh tires on hot asphalt. It finishes fast and dry, leaving a lingering citrus zest that practically demands the next sip.
Chug Shootout is a perfectly dialed-in IPA. It manages to balance the aggressive, dank aromatics of a DDH brew with the refreshing, “snap-dry” finish of a classic California IPA. There are no pit stops or heavy malts here, just a pure, hop-forward sprint that celebrates 12 years of excellence.
