To stand out, especially with a West Coast IPA, the style that defined craft beer for decades, requires either legendary status or something technically brilliant. Shred Beer Co., out of Rocklin, California, is making a serious case for the latter with Kiefer Madness.
In a market often dominated by juice bombs and pastry stouts, Kiefer Madness is a refreshing, snappy return to form that reminds you why this style is iconic.
First Impressions
On a pour, Kiefer Madness is everything you want a West Coast IPA to look like. It’s crystal clear, a beautiful, pale amber-gold that looks bright and clean in the glass. It builds a frothy, bone-white head that persists, leaving significant lacing as it recedes. The clarity alone is a statement of intent, signaling a focus on cleanliness and technical precision.
Aroma
The nose is immediate and pungent. The hops on display strongly suggest the “holy trinity” of West Coast brewing: Cascade, Centennial, and Columbus. You get massive, bright grapefruit peel and pine resin out front, immediately followed by secondary notes of damp earth, dried apricots, and a hint of something floral, like fresh alfalfa. It is unapologetically “green” and resinous, exactly as promised.
Flavor Profile
The first sip is a pleasant surprise. The initial flavor is that of clean, cracking malt—think soda crackers and faint light caramel. This provides a clean, dry foundation that prevents the massive bitterness from being overwhelming.
The hops are the real star, hitting you mid-palette with a resinous pine character, perfectly balanced by notes of grapefruit pith, candied orange peel, and a surprising, sophisticated layer of stone fruit (peach/apricot).

Shred Beer Co. has not reinvented the wheel with Kiefer Madness, but they have built a better wheel. This is a masterclass in the traditional West Coast style. It has the high-impact aroma and bitterness of a hype IPA, but retains the clean, dry, bready finish of a small-batch lager.
