Beer Review: Grimm Artisanal Ales – Coal Miner’s Daughter
Style: Grisette / Farmhouse Ale
ABV: 3.4%
Brewery Location: Brooklyn, New York
In a craft beer landscape often dominated by high-ABV trend-chasers, Grimm Artisanal Ales delivers an absolute masterclass in restraint and historical revival with Coal Miner’s Daughter. This grisette is a literal glass of sunshine, resurrecting a historic Belgian style originally brewed to refresh miners after an exhausting day underground. Sitting at a highly sessionable 3.4% ABV, it proves that a beer doesn’t need a massive footprint to deliver remarkable depth, complexity, and sheer refreshment.
Appearance
Coal Miner’s Daughter pours a brilliantly pale, luminous straw-gold with a soft, delicate cloudiness that looks beautifully artisanal. An ultra-active stream of fine carbonation rushes to the surface, supporting a billowy, rocky snow-white foam cap. The head retention is fantastic for the style, gradually tapering down into a thick, persistent ring that coats the glass in elegant lacing.
Aroma
The nose is incredibly bright, clean, and restorative. Upfront, it bursts with high-toned citrus notes of squeezed lemon, preserved lemon rind, and lemongrass. Beneath the initial citrus rush lies a comforting layer of rustic cracked wheat and a highly expressive farmhouse yeast profile, throwing off classic phenolic notes of fresh-ground white pepper and a faint hint of earthy wildflower fields.
Palate & Mouthfeel
On the palate, this beer is wonderfully lithe, sprightly, and light-bodied. Thanks to a high level of natural effervescence, the mouthfeel is wonderfully prickly and crisp, making the liquid feel completely weightless on the tongue.
The flavor profile leads with a bright splash of tart lemon curd and rustic, doughy grain flavors. By the mid-palate, an intriguing, crisp minerality cuts through, anchoring the beer’s lighter elements and paying a beautiful homage to its historic industrial roots.
Finish
The finish is bone-dry, ultra-crisp, and thoroughly cleansing. The energetic carbonation completely scrubs the palate, leaving a pristine slate highlighted by a lingering pop of white pepper spice, a faint herbal noble hop note, and mouthwatering zesty acidity. It is a flawless balancing act that practically commands you to take another sip.
Grimm has created something incredibly special here. Coal Miner’s Daughter hits every single mark for a world-class grisette: it is agile, hyper-refreshing, and historically minded, yet it boasts an elegant complexity that keeps your palate engaged from start to finish. It is the ultimate warm-weather reward beer, unassuming, perfectly balanced, and undeniably slammable.
