The Shred Micro Blaster Session IPA

A textbook example of a great session IPA. It delivers all the hop character you’d expect from an IPA, with bright citrus notes, a clean bitterness, and a fantastic aroma, all in a remarkably drinkable and light package. It’s a beer that doesn’t compromise on flavor to achieve its low ABV.

Appearance – Pours a brilliant, hazy gold with a soft, persistent white head. The haze is a nice, even cloudiness, not chunky or turbid, suggesting a good amount of protein and hop oils. It holds its head well, lacing the glass with each sip. It looks lively and inviting, exactly what you want from a session IPA.

Aroma – The first thing that hits you is a wave of bright, citrusy hops. I’m picking up a lot of grapefruit, some sweet orange, and a hint of lime zest. There’s a subtle tropical fruit character as well—maybe a bit of passion fruit and a whisper of green mango. The malt presence is minimal, offering a clean, bready aroma that provides a solid foundation without overpowering the other flavors. It smells fresh and vibrant, promising a very drinkable experience.

Flavor – The taste perfectly follows the nose. That citrusy hop character is front and center. The grapefruit and orange notes are the stars of the show, but there’s a pleasant bitterness that keeps things from becoming one-dimensional. It’s a clean, resinous bitterness that’s assertive but not harsh.

The malt profile is exactly what a session IPA needs: it’s light, with a simple biscuity and slightly sweet flavor that supports the hops without adding too much body or sweetness. It’s dry on the finish, which is crucial for a beer that’s meant to be enjoyed more than once. The bitterness lingers just enough to invite another sip, and the low alcohol content means you can do just that.

Mouthfeel – This is where the “session” part shines. It’s light-bodied, crisp, and incredibly refreshing. The carbonation is moderate and lively, lifting the flavors and cleansing the palate. It’s not a chewy or thick IPA, but it’s not watery either. It has just the right amount of structure to feel substantial on the tongue while remaining easy to drink.

Overall Impression

This is a perfect beer for a hot day, a long afternoon, or when you want a hop-forward beer without the heavy alcohol content. It’s well-balanced, meticulously crafted, and a genuinely enjoyable pint—cheers to the brewers on this one.
