Beer Review: Barebottle Brewing Co. – Royale With Nelson
Style: Hazy / New England IPA
ABV: ~6.8% – 7.2% (Varies by batch)
Hops: Nelson Sauvin (Primary)
Barebottle is known for its “crowdsourced” approach to brewing and its playful pop-culture references. Royale With Nelson is a clear nod to Pulp Fiction, but instead of a quarter-pounder with cheese, this beer delivers a heavyweight dose of one of the world’s most coveted hops: New Zealand’s Nelson Sauvin.
Appearance
This IPA pours a thick, opaque straw-gold. It carries that signature “juice” look with a dense, frothy white head that lingers like sea foam. The carbonation is visible but soft, promising a creamy mouthfeel.
Aroma
The nose is an absolute punch of gooseberry and white wine grapes. Because it’s Nelson-forward, you get that distinct “diesel” and “dank” undertone that hop-heads crave, balanced out by bright notes of passionfruit and crushed lime.
Flavor Profile
The Lead: You’re immediately hit with the “Nelson” funk—tasting like a hybrid of a tropical fruit basket and a crisp Sauvignon Blanc.
The Middle: A silky, pillowy body (likely from heavy use of oats and wheat) carries flavors of mango and peach.
The Finish: Remarkably smooth. There is very little “hop bite” or lingering bitterness. It finishes clean with a slight resinous snap that invites the next sip.
Mouthfeel
This is where Barebottle excels. It’s velvety and full-bodied without feeling heavy or syrupy. The soft carbonation makes it dangerously drinkable for its ABV.
If you love the specific, complex profile of Nelson hops, this is a must-try. It isn’t a “citrus bomb” like many West Coast IPAs; instead, it’s a sophisticated, fruity, and slightly dank haze that beautifully honors its namesake hop.
Pro Tip:
Freshness is key with Barebottle hazies. Check the “Canned On” date on the bottom of the 16oz can, try to drink this within 60 days for the best aromatic experience.
