Beer Review: Gold Dot Sládek 12°

Brewery: Gold Dot Beer (McMinnville, OR)

Format: 16oz Tallboy Can

Style: Czech-Style Pale Lager (Světlé Ležák)

ABV: ~5.0% (12° Plato)

The Vibe

Gold Dot is the “supergroup” of the lager world, founded by Kevin Davey (the mind behind Wayfinder’s legendary lagers) and Lisa Allen (formerly of Heater Allen). Their Sládek 12° is a masterclass in the Czech tradition. The “12°” refers to the degrees Plato, signaling a classic “Ležák” or premium lager strength. This isn’t just a beer; it’s a technical showcase of floor-malted barley and specific hop selection.

Appearance

It pours a slightly deeper gold than your average German Pilsner, radiant and glowing like a polished brass coin. It produces a dense, creamy, “meringue-like” head that leaves thick rings of lace down the glass, a hallmark of the traditional decoction mash used by the brewers.

Aroma

The nose is defined by the namesake Sládek hop. While Saaz hops usually provide the spice, Sládek brings a unique herbal sweetness and a touch of fruitiness (think pear or white plum). Behind the hops is a rich, bready aroma of fresh-baked sourdough crust and honeyed grain.

Tasting Notes

The Lead: A soft, rounded bitterness. Unlike the “snappy” bite of a Northern German Pils, this is smooth and integrated.

The Body: Medium-bodied and remarkably “chewy” for a lager. The floor-malted Czech barley provides a rustic, savory depth that feels substantial on the palate.

The Finish: A gentle, lingering spice. There is a tiny, intentional touch of diacetyl (a butterscotch note) which is true to the authentic Czech profile, adding a velvety mouthfeel that invites another gulp.

The Verdict

Gold Dot Sládek 12° is the lager for people who think they’ve “tried everything.” It eschews the ultra-dry trend in favor of richness, texture, and tradition. It is a soulful beer that feels like it was transported directly from a basement taproom in Prague.

Final Thought: This is “Brewer’s Beer.” It’s unpretentious but flawless in execution. If you see a four-pack, buy two; they disappear faster than you’d think.
