Beer Review: Vor Tai (Fort George Brewery x Alvarado Street Brewery)
When two titans of the West Coast IPA scene decide to shake hands, your expectations should be high. Vor Tai is a heavy-hitting collaboration between Astoria’s Fort George Brewery and Monterey’s Alvarado Street Brewery. Billed as a “Tropical India Pale Ale,” this 7% ABV powerhouse aims to capture the essence of a vacation in a 16-ounce can.
Appearance
Vor Tai pours a gorgeous, slightly hazy golden straw color. It is topped with a frothy, bright white head that leaves consistent, soapy lacing down the glass. It looks exactly like a modern IPA should: vibrant and inviting.
Aroma
The nose is a tropical explosion. Before the glass even hits your lips, you are hit with waves of passionfruit, lime zest, and toasted coconut. There is a distinct “Mai Tai” vibe here that goes beyond just a clever name. Beneath the fruit, you get a clean, crackery malt base and a hint of damp pine.
Flavor Profile
This beer is a masterclass in balance. While the aroma promises sweetness, the flavor delivers a refreshing, dry complexity.
Initial Sip: Bright citrus notes of tangerine and pomelo.
Mid-Palate: The tropical “cocktail” elements take over. Think grilled pineapple and a touch of almond-like nuttiness that mimics orgeat syrup.
The Finish: A crisp, assertive bitterness cuts through the fruit. It finishes clean with a lingering resinous snap that reminds you this is, indeed, a Northwest-brewed IPA.
Mouthfeel
For a 7% beer, it is remarkably drinkable. The carbonation is medium-high, providing a prickly sensation that keeps the heavier tropical flavors from feeling cloying. It has a medium body and a soft, almost creamy texture, likely due to a thoughtful grain bill.
Final Verdict
Vor Tai is a brilliant bridge between the hazy, fruit-forward trends of California and the structural, bitter backbone of Oregon IPAs. It successfully mimics a tropical cocktail without relying on excessive additives, letting the hops do the heavy lifting.
This is a “must-grab” if you see it on the shelves. It is complex enough for a slow sipper but refreshing enough for a sunny afternoon on the patio.
