Beer Review: Otherwise Brewing “Calrose Crisp” Rice Lager
Otherwise Brewing out of San Francisco is doing something genuinely impressive by tackling the world of gluten-free beer through the lens of craft technique rather than just substitution. Their Calrose Crisp is a standout example of why rice lagers deserve more than just “macro” status.
The Pour
It lives up to its name immediately with a crystal-clear, straw-yellow appearance. The carbonation is lively, supporting a bright white head that retains surprisingly well for a gluten-free brew.
The Aroma
On the nose, you get a clean, herbal spice profile. There are distinct notes of toasted rice—think of the fragrant steam from a fresh pot of Calrose—balanced by a subtle honey-like sweetness. The hops provide a “noble” touch with hints of dried grass and a slight citrus zest.
The Taste and Mouthfeel
The mouthfeel is where this beer truly excels. It is light-bodied and incredibly dry, making it a quintessential “crusher.”
The Front: A sharp, clean snap of carbonation and crisp rice malt.
The Mid-Palate: A smooth, almost velvety texture (thanks to the addition of a bit of millet malt) that carries the herbal hop flavors.
The Finish:
Bone-dry and refreshing, leaving a lingering warmth of earthy spice and toasted crackers.
While many gluten-free beers struggle with a “syrupy” or overly sweet finish from sorghum or heavy syrups, Calrose Crisp is a masterclass in minimalism. It’s a 5% ABV lager that doesn’t hide behind fruit or heavy hops, allowing the high-quality malted rice to shine.
Best Paired With:
- Fresh sushi or sashimi
- Spicy Thai or Cantonese dishes
- A sunny afternoon in a San Francisco park
If you’re looking for a gluten-free beer that actually tastes like a high-end Japanese-style lager, this is the one to grab.
