Beer Review: Sante Adairius Rustic Ales Verdant Blooms

  • Style: Rice Lager
  • Brewery: Sante Adairius Rustic Ales (Capitola, California)

Sante Adairius Rustic Ales (SARA) is renowned globally for their immaculate barrel-aged saisons and sour beers. When they turn their focus to clean, delicate lagers, the results are always compelling. “Verdant Blooms” is a Rice Lager, and we were eager to see how the SARA touch translated to this pristine, understated style.

Appearance:

Poured from the striking, psychedelic-art can shown in Verdant-Blooms.jpg into a pilsner glass. The beer pours an incredibly pale, straw-gold. It is brilliant and sparkling with crystal-clear luminosity. A modest, tight-bubbled white head forms quickly but recedes to a fine collar, suggesting a dry profile.

Aroma:

The nose is wonderfully delicate but surprisingly assertive for a rice lager. It opens with clean, crackery malt and fresh white bread notes. This is followed by a lovely, soft floral hop aroma—reminiscent of cherry blossoms and a touch of sweet hay. The rice adjunct seems to contribute to a specific, almost sake-like pear and subtle melon fruitiness.

Flavor:

This is an absolute masterclass in restraint and clean execution. The first sip is brisk and incredibly refreshing. The grain bill provides a neutral, crisp canvas that lets the hops shine: a balanced interplay of Noble hop spice and delicate lemon zest. The rice component seems to lighten the body and prevent residual sweetness. There is a precise, snap-like finish that is utterly clean, leaving the palate instantly refreshed.

Mouthfeel:

Light-bodied and extremely crisp. The carbonation is lively and effervescent. Despite its lightness, it doesn’t feel ‘thin’; it has an elegant, almost polished texture.
