Beer Review: Other Half Parquet Floors Hazy IPA
Other Half Brewing Company continues its dominance in the hazy arena with Parquet Floors, a 7.0% ABV New England IPA that balances foundational juice-bomb qualities with advanced hop selection. Marketed with an engaging basketball theme—designed to hit like a full-court press of flavor—this release features a heavy-hitting combination of Citra, Galaxy, and Talus hops. The interplay between these specific varietals creates a multi-dimensional profile that spans traditional tropical notes, bright citrus punch, and distinct floral accents.
Appearance
Parquet Floors pours a heavy, completely opaque, turbid straw-yellow to glowing peach color with a dense, fine-bubbled head of bright white foam. The head retention is excellent, gradually receding to a persistent skim while leaving a beautiful pattern of thick, streaky lacing and uniform sheeting all along the glass.
Aroma
The bouquet is highly aromatic, immediate, and punchy. Up front, it bursts with clean citrus notes of sweet tangerine, orange peel, and ruby red grapefruit. As the beer opens up, the tropical influence takes over, revealing layered aromas of fresh passion fruit, lychee, diced pineapple, and green guava. The Talus hops introduce an intriguing structural contrast, pinning the bright fruit together with subtle backnotes of dried herbs, rose petals, and a faint, sweet doughiness from the grain bill.
Palate
The flavor profile mirrors the nose but hits with added intensity. The initial sip delivers a saturated, sugary rush of candied orange peel, brown-sugar-coated grapefruit, and ripe peach flavor. The mid-palate shifts into deeper tropical complexity, highlighting a tart mix of mango, passion fruit, and lime resin. The finish features remarkably low bitterness, offering just a clean hint of citrus zest and damp pine to balance out the sweet fruit juice character.
Mouthfeel
True to Other Half’s flagship style, the texture here is a major selling point. The body is thick, hefty, and incredibly soft, offering a pillowy, velvety creaminess on the tongue that makes the beer feel substantial. Soft, fine carbonation keeps the substantial weight from feeling stagnant or syrupy, ensuring an incredibly smooth, easy-drinking delivery that masks the 7.0% alcohol content completely.
Finish
It finishes soft, juicy, and semi-dry. A lingering, resinous fruit-skin dryness stays on the back of the palate, carrying final notes of pink grapefruit and tropical fruit oils that invite you right back for another sip.
