Beer Review: Elysian Night Owl Pumpkin Ale
Brewery: Elysian Brewing Company (Seattle, WA)
Style: Pumpkin Ale
ABV: 6.7%
Availability: Seasonal (Fall release)
Appearance
Night Owl pours a deep amber to copper color with a slight haze and a fluffy, off-white head that lingers modestly before settling into a thin cap. Swirling the glass leaves a nice ring of lacing, hinting at a medium body. It looks every bit the autumn beer it’s intended to be.
Aroma
From the first sniff, pumpkin is unmistakable—but it’s not cloying. Freshly roasted pumpkin comes forward alongside warm baking spices: cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, and allspice. A subtle graham cracker maltiness rounds it out, giving the impression of pumpkin pie cooling on a windowsill.
Taste
Night Owl manages balance better than many pumpkin ales. The pumpkin itself is the star, but spices do not drown it out. Up front, sweet malt and roasted pumpkin flavors play together. The mid-palate introduces the spice blend—enough to provide warmth without overwhelming the senses. The finish is slightly sweet, with a touch of earthy hops, which keeps it from being one-dimensional.
Mouthfeel
Medium-bodied with a smooth, almost creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate, lifting the spice and sweetness without biting. The finish is clean, leaving a lingering warmth of pumpkin pie spices.
Elysian has been making pumpkin beers longer than most breweries, and Night Owl shows that experience. While some seasonal ales overdo it with syrupy sweetness or spice overload, Night Owl strikes a thoughtful balance: real pumpkin flavor supported by, not buried under, traditional pie spices.
It’s festive without being a gimmick, making it a solid go-to when autumn rolls around. Best enjoyed around a bonfire with friends, or as a companion to a slice of actual pumpkin pie.
Best for: Fans of balanced pumpkin beers, fall gatherings, and anyone who wants a seasonal ale that doesn’t taste like a candle.
